Mark Towsey

Mark Towsey is Professor in the History of the Book and Director of the Eighteenth-Century Worlds Research Centre at the University of Liverpool in the UK. He has published widely on the history of libraries, reading habits and the social history of ideas, including Reading the Scottish Enlightenment (2010), Before the Public Library (with Kyle B. Roberts, 2017), Reading History in Britain and America c.1750-c.1840 (2019) and The First Minute Book of the Liverpool Athenaeum (with David Brazendale, 2020). He has recently been awarded a grant in excess of £1m from the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council for work towards a digital reconstruction of subscription library catalogues and circulation records in Britain and America in the eighteenth century.
